Case Study – Anaheim Convention Center

Smith’s Color Shield is a revolutionary system for adding color to newly placed cured concrete or rejuvenating old integral color and/or plain exterior concrete. Color Shield utilizes UV stable pigments in conjunction with a hybrid penetrating and self cross-linking urethane carrier.

Whether a monotone color or color variation is the desired appearance, Smith’s Color Shield allows the applicator to decide. This system does not require a film forming sealer, thus drastically reduces slip and fall issues associated with sealed concrete.

Smith’s Color Shield system is created by mixing 1 part Smith’s Color Floor with 8 parts Smith’s Nature Shield which is spray applied to exterior porous concrete and worked into the surface with a soft bristle nylon push broom.

Not only is Smith’s Color Shield easy to initially install, it has indefinite inter-coat adhesion making long term re-application a breeze. Some notable installations include entrance to San Diego Zoo, Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center Campus, Universal Studios Hollywood splash pad and Kings Dominion waterpark.

The Grand Plaza project at the Anaheim Convention Center consisted of a 100,000 sq.ft. pedestrian outdoor space at the main entrance for the Anaheim Convention Center, the Anaheim Hilton Hotel and the Marriott Hotel . J& M Concrete Contractors constructed th e architectural concrete paving, three water feature with cantilevered terraces at the large elliptical fountain adjacent to the primary entry to the convention center .

RJM Design Group incorporated meandering patt erns of color using Smith’s Nature Shield with Color Floor to achieve an integral, non – film forming stain and sealer for the heavy pedestrian traffic as well as LED lighting features and surface – seeded with natural crushed rock and recycled blue glass. The Anaheim Convention Center project occurred in 201 2 and is the largest exhibit facility o n the west coast with over 1 million annual visitors.
